PHER at Black Cat brings the Oakland-born vocalist and songwriter — formerly recording as Chris Turner — to San Francisco for a two-show night of soul, jazz, R&B, and gospel powered by one of the Bay Area’s most distinctive voices. PHER has recorded and performed with Jon Batiste, Esperanza Spalding, Snarky Puppy, Prince, Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Robert Glasper, Jill Scott, Common, Bilal, and the SFJAZZ Collective, and The New York Times has praised his “misty, grooving music” for its blend of “composure and longing.” His latest album, Songs by PHER, explores love, vulnerability, family, and self-discovery, while his forthcoming PHER Sings the Blues turns toward the jazz tradition.
