The 230 Jones Street Band
August 16 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
$20
The 230 Jones Street Band at Bird & Beckett brings the bookshop’s longest-running jazz lineage to the Sunday happy hour slot, a legacy band descended from the trio that launched the venue’s jazz series back in 2002. The group takes its name from the old Musicians Union Local 6 hall at 230 Jones Street, where founding bassist Chuck Peterson and his colleagues organized for fair contracts and working conditions in the 1960s; drummer Tony Johnson, on the San Francisco scene since 1959, leads the band today. He’s joined by saxophonist Charlie McCarthy, a frontline veteran the venue credits with taking flight at the downbeat and never failing to swing, alongside pianist Sam Cady and bassist Chuck Bennett for a straight-ahead, standards-driven set.
