Ralph Alessi brings the refined, adventurous sound of a true ECM artist to Mr. Tipple’s — the San Francisco-born trumpeter and composer has spent decades at the forefront of creative jazz, recording and performing alongside Fred Hersch, Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Jason Moran, Sam Rivers, Tim Berne, Uri Caine, and many others. His fifth record for the storied ECM label arrived in January 2026, adding to a discography that marks him as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary improvised music. As dedicated to music education as he is to performance, Alessi has taught at the Eastman School of Music, NYU, the University of Nevada-Reno, and HKB-Bern, and currently serves as visiting professor at the Accademia Nazionale del Jazz in Siena, Italy — and since 2001 has led the School for Improvisational Music, an internationally acclaimed workshop series based in Brooklyn, NY.
