Nathan Tokunaga Quartet at Bird & Beckett features the Bay Area-raised, New York-based clarinetist and saxophonist Nathan Tokunaga, a 2026 YoungArts winner in jazz clarinet who turned professional at fourteen. Tokunaga builds his repertoire from early jazz and the Great American Songbook, shaped by mentors Clint Baker and Evan Christopher, and has played Jazz at Lincoln Center, Birdland, Smalls, and the Healdsburg Jazz Festival while studying at The New School. He comes home with pianist Charles Chen, bassist Mikiya Matsuda, and drummer Benny Amon for a set of swing-forward 1920s-to-’40s material delivered with a modern voice.
