Vibe: Art Deco Lounge | Sophisticated & Intimate | Retro Jazz Sanctuary

Stookey’s Blue Room is the sultry, music-forward companion to the legendary Stookey’s Club Moderne. Opened in early 2024, it extends the owners’ devotion to Streamline Moderne aesthetics, creating a room that feels like a 1940s film noir set brought to life. While Club Moderne centers on the art of the pre-war cocktail, the Blue Room is a dedicated performance salon, with glossy blue walls, shimmering disco-ball light, and a cozy stage that brings guests face-to-face with some of the city’s finest jazz and cabaret artists.
The “Stookey’s duo” — founders Tim Stookey, Leslie Cole, and Aaron Cole — treat the space as a love letter to a particular era of San Francisco glamour. Interior details are meticulous, from porthole door windows and white-jacketed bartenders to vintage glassware sourced from local auctions. By expanding into the Blue Room, they’ve revived the spirit of the mid-century supper club (minus the dinner), offering a polished but welcoming refuge for those who prefer their martinis served with a side of live syncopation.
Live Music & Atmosphere
The entertainment program runs five nights a week, with an impressively eclectic mix that spans traditional bebop and swing trios. The room is intentionally intimate, designed so the band feels close, the sound wraps around the audience, and the lighting keeps everything in a warm, cinematic glow. It’s as comfortable for serious listeners as it is for guests just discovering jazz and cabaret for the first time.
Signature Jazz Residencies
Stookey’s Blue Room showcases some of the Bay Area’s top-tier jazz talent, with recurring appearances by groups like Trio Côtier, pianist Ken Chou, and vocalist Kim Nalley. Many weeknight sets (including the packed Wednesday’s Jazz Jam) are offered with no cover, with a suggested donation for the band that keeps the program accessible while valuing the artists’ craft. Weekends often feature ticketed or higher-profile shows that turn the space into a full-on retro jazz sanctuary.
Vintage Cocktail Nerdery
True to its roots, the bar program is a deep dive into cocktail history, with drinks organized by their year of origin from roughly 1900 through 1990. Classicists and cocktail nerds alike will find plenty to explore, from impeccably prepared pre-Prohibition standards to mid-century favorites. House signatures include the 100 Reasons Rye (Rye, Punt e Mes, Cointreau, Orange Bitters) and Penicillin(Scotch, Ginger Infused Honey, Fresh Lemon), both as photogenic as they are period-correct.
Details That Define the Room
• Streamline Moderne interiors with glossy blue walls, porthole details, and classy black attired bartenders (white-jacketed bartenders next door) evoking 1940s film noir.
• Live entertainment five nights a week, ranging from swing and bebop trios to cabaret, drag, and curated film events.
• Regular jazz residencies featuring standout local artists, with many weeknight sets offered with no cover and encouraged band donations.
• Cocktail menu organized by year of origin, spotlighting historically informed recipes and house signatures like the 100 Reasons Rye and Stookey’s Penicillin.
• An intimate, seated environment that feels like a mid-century supper club for modern San Francisco — minus dinner, but with serious drinks and serious music.
