Muddy Waters is a Valencia Street institution with a new evening identity. By day, it is a relaxed Mission café serving dark-roast coffee, smoothies, and gluten-free fufu bowls; after dark, it becomes Baobab Lounge, a warm, low-lit room for West African food, wine, dancing, and close-up live music.
Food & Atmosphere
The menu draws from West African and global flavors rather than standard coffee-shop fare, with superfood smoothies, dark-roast coffee, fufu bowls, and evening plates shaped by owner Marco Senghor’s Bissap Baobab legacy. The room shifts noticeably at night: hand-painted panels, red drapes, low lamps, and a small band setup create the feeling of a compact cultural salon rather than a conventional café.
Music & Scene
Live music is a regular part of the nighttime rhythm, with lineups posted through the venue’s Instagram. Saturdays belong to tango from 11 AM into the afternoon, while evening programming ranges from jazz and salsa to globally rooted dance and music nights. The venue also hosts recurring Cuban jazz and salsa nights with room for both listeners and dancers.
