Vibe: Retro Newspaper Speakeasy | Film Noir Aesthetics | Subterranean Jazz Lounge

Local Edition hides beneath Market Street in the historic Hearst building and former home to the San Francisco Examiner. It’s a cocktail bar built around vintage printing presses, typewriters, and front pages from San Francisco’s newspaper heyday. You enter down a stairway off Market and emerge into a sprawling, low-lit lounge with red velvet drapes. It’s equal parts downtown after-work refuge and live music venue.

Live Music & Atmosphere
The bar leans into jump blues, swing, and jazz that nod to the 1930s–50s, often with space cleared for dancing. Bands like Hella Fitzgerald X Honor Brass Band and the Cosmo Alleycats keep the energy upbeat rather than strictly listening room quiet. On busy nights the room fills fast, with clusters of reserved tables and plenty of standing space around the bar and dance floor. It captures the “Mad Men” era glamour where editors and reporters might have ducked away for a stiff drink between deadlines.
Drinks & Hours
Local Edition is serious about cocktails — classics and house creations served in proper glassware, with a menu that rewards repeat visits. The bar opens most weekdays at 4:30 p.m. and stays open late, especially Thursday through Saturday, making it a natural stop before or after dinner downtown. Reservations are available online, but walk-ins are welcome and there’s usually space somewhere in the room.

• Located under Market Street — look for the sign and head down the stairs.
• Live music most nights, often 8:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m., with swing- and jump-blues-focused bands.
• Displaying original newspapers (from the 1906 Earthquake to the moon landing) and printing-press artifacts make it worth wandering the room to explore.
• Plenty of standing room and tables for walk-ins even when reservations are booked.
• In a nod to its tycoon lineage, the marble used for the bar top and table surfaces was actually sourced from the surplus stock intended for Hearst Castle in San Simeon.
