Vibe: Outer Richmond Music Room | Vintage Neighborhood Cinema | Record-Shop Creative Hub
The 4 Star Theater is a historic Clement Street movie house with a second life as an intimate live-music venue. Concerts share the calendar with independent films and cult favorites, bringing local musicians, touring artists, and adventurous audiences into a room that feels more like a neighborhood arts clubhouse than a conventional club.
Food & Atmosphere
The concessions keep the experience refreshingly informal: popcorn, hot dogs, and beer or wine instead of a full restaurant menu. Red velvet curtains, restored ceiling lights, and vintage architectural details give the theater warmth and character, while its seated layout makes it easy to settle in and pay attention to the performance.
Live Music & Scene
Live music is a substantial part of the 4 Star’s identity, with programming that ranges from indie rock and folk to jazz, electronic music, and experimental performances. Artists including the Flamin’ Groovies, Taj Mahal, Suzanne Ciani, and the Reds, Pinks & Purples have played the room, reflecting a mix of established names and independent talent.
The appeal is close-up listening rather than a sprawling dance floor. Musicians perform on a narrow stage in front of the cinema seats, and the room’s curtains and acoustics help keep the sound clear and warm. Some shows get livelier, but the setting gives even a rock concert an unusually attentive, personal feel.
