Japanese-born, Bay Area–based pianist, composer, and sound artist Motoko Honda brings her Simple Excesses Quartet to Mr Tipples. Performing an inventive blend of contemporary classical chamber music, modern jazz, and free improvisation, the ensemble features multi-woodwind player Cory Wright, bassist Matt Small, and drummer Jordan Glenn. Honda’s compositions combine intricate formal structures and delicate textural spaces with bursts of rhythmic drive and unrestrained group interaction.
