SUMMARY:Le Jazz Hot
DESCRIPTION:Le Jazz Hot brings the romance and fire of 1930s Parisian jazz to The Grove\, celebrating the pioneering music of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli with a trio. The all-string instrumentation mirrors the original Hot Club de France\, but Mehling’s innovative arrangements and original compositions keep the music vital and alive — earning praise from Acoustic Guitar as “intricate\, scorching and often brilliant.” With eleven albums and over 30 years of performances spanning festivals in Mexico and France to concert halls across North America\, Le Jazz Hot carries audiences straight to the small\, smoky jazz clubs of Paris.

SUMMARY:Jose Simioni
DESCRIPTION:Experience the uniquely Jose sound as the legendary Jose Simioni takes the stage at Tupelo. A North Beach fixture for over two decades\, Simioni is a self-taught master whose playing defies easy categorization. He eschews traditional licks for a deeply personal\, improvisational style that makes his guitar sing—moving seamlessly from floating\, lazy melodies to a rocking\, soulful growl. Whether he is leading his trio or performing solo\, a night with Simioni is a masterclass in musical identity. \nThe Sound: Simioni’s style is a sophisticated\, gritty blend of Jazz\, Blues\, and Rock. Influenced by everyone from Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to jazz greats like Joe Pass and Jim Hall\, he has synthesized these icons into a sound that is entirely his own. His sets often feature brilliantly unrecognizable popular tunes delivered with a level of panache that only a veteran of the Grant Avenue circuit can provide. \nThe North Beach Legacy: Originally arriving from Washington D.C. with nothing but a guitar\, an amp\, and a sleeping bag\, Simioni has since played every imaginable venue in San Francisco. His residencies at Tupelo and the neighboring Saloon have made him a living cornerstone of the city’s blues and jazz tradition. \nIntimate Improvisation: As an artist who values floating melodies and spontaneous creation\, Simioni turns the dim\, red-lit atmosphere of Tupelo into an intimate laboratory for sound. \nNo Cover Charge: This world-class display of guitar artistry is open to all patrons with no cover. It is a quintessential North Beach experience: raw\, authentic\, and performed by a musician who has spent thirty years perfecting his craft in the heart of the city. \n\nAbout Jose Simioni\nJose Simioni is a composer and guitarist who has built one of the most respected reputations in the San Francisco music scene. Refusing to sound like a carbon copy of his influences\, he has spent his career developing an unconventional technique that prioritizes emotion and original phrasing over standard licks. Usually performing as part of an organ trio—often featuring seasoned pros like Tony Stead on the B3 and Dylan Garrison on drums—Simioni remains a musician’s musician\, celebrated for his ability to make even the most familiar standards feel like a brand-new discovery.

SUMMARY:The Kevin Gerzevitz Trio
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Gerzevitz brings a deeply rooted and refreshingly offbeat piano trio to Mr. Tipple’s Recording Studio\, joined by Ari Munkres on bass and Tim Bulkley on drums. Gerzevitz came up listening to Duke Ellington\, Oscar Peterson\, and Thelonious Monk\, before his college advisor pointed him toward the stride and boogie of Jelly Roll Morton\, James P. Johnson\, and Fats Waller — a foundation he later broadened with the harmonic worlds of McCoy Tyner\, Bill Evans\, and Keith Jarrett. For the past six years\, the trio has made a specialty of the quirky\, swinging compositions of cult pianist Herbie Nichols\, performing regularly at San Francisco’s beloved Flower Piano series in the SF Botanical Garden. \nTickets: $15–30

SUMMARY:Rotating Bands at the Lion’s Den
DESCRIPTION:Experience the resurgence of San Francisco’s historic Chinatown nightlife at the Lion’s Den.  Tucked away on Wentworth Place\, this bi-level lounge and performance space blends modern cocktail culture with the East meets West spirit of the Chinatown’s golden age. Every week\, the venue transforms into a unique destination for live music\, featuring a rotating roster of the city’s up and coming funk\, soul\, and R&B ensembles. \nThe Sound: From 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM\, the stage belongs to a curated selection of live bands. The rotation frequently features bands such as Mark Maiden\, Funky Sound Experience\, Jay Neal\, The Groove Foundation\, Baycoin Beats\, and Git With It. Whether it’s deep-pocket funk or smooth contemporary soul\, the music is designed to bridge the gap between a sophisticated lounge set and a packed dance floor. \nThe Atmosphere: The design features plush velvet banquettes\, historic photography\, and dim\, moody lighting. It is a space built for “adult” nightlife—where you can enjoy an Asian-inspired craft cocktail during the live set before the room transitions to a high-energy DJ vibe after 11:00 PM. \nThe Experience: The Lion’s Den is a rare “no cover” gem in the heart of the city\, offering world-class musicianship in an intimate\, stylish setting. It is a place to rediscover the “cool” of Chinatown while supporting the next generation of San Francisco’s musical talent. \n\nA Legacy Reclaimed\nThe Lion’s Den occupies a legendary footprint in San Francisco history. In the 1940s and 50s\, Chinatown was a global nightlife epicenter\, home to iconic clubs like the Forbidden City. The current venue at 57 Wentworth Place was once the site of Dragon A Go Go\, a 1960s hotspot that kept the neighborhood buzzing during the height of the San Francisco counterculture. After decades of relative quiet due to changing zoning laws\, the reopening of The Lion’s Den in 2021 marked the first new nightclub to open in Chinatown in nearly 40 years. Today\, it stands as a cultural bridge\, honoring the glamour of the “Harlem of the West” era while providing a vital modern stage for Asian-American artists and the local creative community.

SUMMARY:Jinx Jones
DESCRIPTION:Jinx Jones Biography (Jazz Trio)\n“Jinx is a guitar virtuoso who seamlessly moves from rockabilly to jazz to twang and back again\, sometimes in the same song. Those with a liner note obsession will remember Jinx’s playing on En Vogue’s “Free Your Mind.” \n(San Francisco Chronicle) \nJinx Jones boasts a prolific career spanning from the 1990s\, during which he has been a prominent figure in the San Francisco Bay Area jazz scene. His musical journey\, deeply rooted in R&B and Soul collaborations with luminaries such as Solomon Burke and En Vogue\, has laid a solid groundwork for his ventures into the realms of soul jazz and hard bop. Jones’ distinctive approach to jazz is deeply influenced by the venerable traditions set forth by iconic guitarists such as Wes Montgomery\, Kenny Burrell\, Barney Kessel\, and George Benson. \n“You’ve heard fretboard prestidigitator Jinx before: he lent studio guitar and bass to En Vogue’s hit\, “Free Your Mind.” Professionally impressive as it is\, though\, that credit does not represent his own chosen styling. Jinx’s headlong endeavors draw freely and unto satiation from classic rocka-billy\, vintage jazz\, and spartan honky tonk….” D. C. Larson\, Crackerjack Magazine\, UK \nIn recent times\, Jinx Jones has achieved international acclaim with the release of his latest solo jazz album\, “Blue Gardenia.” This album showcases his guitar artistry\, striking a perfect balance between delicacy and energy\, reminiscent of the soulful and profound styles of the genre’s legendary masters. \n“Jinx Jones is out there. Four or five nights a week\, the great guitar player with the immaculate pompadour can be found at various Bay Area venues\, working the stage\, doing his thing. The Colorado native came up serving as a sideman to rock ’n’ roll royalty\, playing with the likes of Chuck Berry and Solomon Burke.” \nAidin Vaziri\, San Francisco Chronicle

SUMMARY:Frank Martin / Michael O'Neil Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Embark on a sonic odyssey to some of the world’s most captivating destinations at Keys Jazz Bistro. Composers Frank Martin and Michael O’Neill transform their global adventures into an unforgettable musical experience. Journey from the vibrant chaos of Bangalore’s markets to the sun-drenched rhythms of Trinidad\, from the breathtaking majesty of Kilimanjaro to the sacred echoes of Tikal\, this is your passport to a world of sound—an exploration of exotic locations through the universal language of music. \nThis is a both a reunion  and the beginning of a new collaboration for Frank and me. We were co-members of a composers jazz-fusion band known as Solstice for many years. Since that time\, our career paths have diverged. Frank has enjoyed a remarkable career traveling the world performing with such great artists as Sting\, James Taylor and Stevie Wonder – composing musical impressions along his journeys. As for myself\, in addition to performing I have worked as a composer for television and documentary films for about 20 years and employed those skills to capture – in music – my interpretations of places traveled. To perform our music\, we are joined by master musicians Dan Robbins on bass and Deszon Claiborne on drums.
