SUMMARY:Johnny Z and the Camaros
DESCRIPTION:Witness a true piece of San Francisco musical history as Johnny Z and the Camaros take the stage at Tupelo. If you’ve spent any time in the city’s jazz and rock circuits over the last few decades\, you likely know this band; they famously served as the house band for the legendary Gold Dust Lounge for over 20 years. Bringing that same “workhorse” energy to North Beach\, the Camaros deliver a high-fidelity\, veteran performance that proves why they are often called the “tightest band in the land.” \nThe Sound: Led by vocalist and guitarist John R. Nichols (aka Johnny Z)\, the band occupies a “sweet spot” of Classic Rock\, Soul\, Blues\, and Country. Their style is heavily influenced by 20th-century R&B giants like Otis Redding and Sam & Dave\, often peppered with “Surf action” instrumentals that highlight Johnny Z’s virtuosic guitar work. \nThe Catalog: With a repertoire built from playing seven nights a week for two decades\, their songbook is staggering. Expect a seamless transition from soulful Motown grooves to gritty rock-and-roll anthems\, all delivered with the effortless chemistry that only comes from thousands of hours on stage together. \nA North Beach Homecoming: Tupelo is one of the few places where you can still catch this legendary trio in an intimate setting. The venue’s lively\, red-lit atmosphere perfectly matches the band’s high-energy\, “no-nonsense” approach to live performance. \nNo Cover: This elite piece of San Francisco history is open to the public with no cover charge. It is a must-see for anyone wanting to experience the authentic sound of the city’s musical backbone. \n\nAbout Johnny Z and the Camaros\nJohnny Z (John R. Nichols) comes from a deep musical pedigree; his father was a trombonist for the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. After decades of performing with jazz greats and founding various rock outfits\, Nichols established the Camaros as a premier power trio. Known for his “restless melodicism” and soulful vocals\, Johnny Z is joined by a veteran rhythm section—typically featuring “Richie Camaro” on drums and “Stevie Camaro” on bass. Together\, they represent the “last of the live music breed\,” dedicated to preserving the raw\, spontaneous energy of the 20th-century American songbook.

SUMMARY:Katy Stephan
DESCRIPTION:Katy Stephan’s residency at Comstock Saloon turns the room into a small\, candlelit listening space. At the piano she blends jazz‑inflected originals with reimagined standards and art‑pop tunes\, her clear\, expressive voice sitting right on top of the clink of glassware and low conversation. It’s an intimate\, song‑forward set that feels equally at home as a soundscape for cocktails or as a close‑up performance for guests who want to lean in and really listen.

SUMMARY:Gaea Shell & Scott Foster
DESCRIPTION:Gaea Schell and Scott Foster perform at Biordi Art Imports\, bringing jazz to North Beach First Fridays. Join them for an engaging performance that blends Schell’s mastery of flute\, piano\, and vocals with Foster’s expressive guitar playing. Experience a night of sophisticated jazz\, rich harmonies\, and Latin-inspired rhythms\, making for a memorable musical event at Biordi Imports. \nGaea Schell is known among her peers for swinging eighth notes\, subtle phrasing and contemplative writing\, Bay area based pianist\, composer\, flutist (and vocalist) Gaea Schell (also late diagnosed autistic) is originally from Alberta\, Canada\, where she grew up playing music from an early age. Recorder lessons at age 6 with family friend\, the late San Francisco based drummer Eddie Marshall\, was one of her first musical ventures. \nPursuit of a classical harp degree led to checking out Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans records in the school library\, inspiring a move East (after declining a Berklee scholarship) and subsequent graduation with distinction from the jazz program at acclaimed McGill University in Montreal. The real learning\, however\, came from playing on the bandstand with respected elders who spent considerable time themselves playing with greats such as Joe Henderson\, Wynton Kelly\, Ella Fitzgerald. Gaea feels “it’s so important to listen\, experience\, and understand the tradition of this music”. \nScott Foster received his Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston. He pursued additional music studies at University of California Davis and private studies with Jon Damian\, Rick Peckham and Henry Robinett. Scott is an active performer as leader of the Scott Foster Trio and Quartet and as a sideman with many local groups. His recent recordings range from industrial pop to country and folk to modern jazz. \n

SUMMARY:Magic School Busk
DESCRIPTION:The Magic School Busk holds weekly residency directly in front of The Red Window at the corner of Stockton and Columbus. This high‑energy busking collective has become one of North Beach’s unofficial “resident joy‑makers\,” blurring the line between band and audience as people pause\, sing along\, or dance on the sidewalk. Whether you are enjoying a gin tonic on the Red Window’s outdoor patio or just walking by with a cannoli in hand\, the Busk provides a genuine North Beach experience. \n\nAbout The Magic School Busk\nBorn from the city’s post-pandemic street-side revival\, The Magic School Busk is a collective of veteran Bay Area musicians dedicated to the art of public performance. They emphasize the acoustic and the authentic\, eschewing heavy amplification for the natural resonance of brass\, strings\, and woodwinds. Often featuring members from some of the city’s most popular jazz and swing outfits\, the “Busk” is celebrated for its ability to read a crowd and create a party out of thin air. They represent the best of San Francisco’s musical resilience—keeping the city’s culture loud\, proud\, and accessible to everyone on the street. \n

SUMMARY:Sirenland Poetry Book Release Party w/ Jennifer Barone & Duo Pizzicato
DESCRIPTION:Sirenland\, by Jennifer Barone\nBook Release Party & Poetry Reading with Live Music by Duo Pizzicato \nFriday June 5th\, 2026 from 6:30pm – 8:00pm\nTelegraph Hill Books\, 1501 Grant Ave\, San Francisco\, CA 94133\nPresented by Feather Press & Telegraph Hill Arts & Literature \nJoin us for the launch of Sirenland – a new poetry collection by Jennifer Barone\, published by Feather Press. The evening will feature a poetry reading by the author with special guests and live music by Duo Pizzicato\, Italian Mandolins – followed by a book signing. Sirenland\, by Jennifer Barone features 24 original\, color illustrations and photographs by the author. \nA reclamation of personal lineage – Sirenland is a mythic conversation across time with the poet’s ancestors from the Bay of Naples\, Italy. Ancestral spirits rise from sea caves and memory – as the poet reimagines her grandparents as sirens\, singing stories long submerged. \nIn this collection\, the sirens transform from feared monsters to radiant guardians of land\, sea\, and the Napoletani people. The ache of ancestral loss and immigration threads through grottos and sea caves of oracular whisper\, as Vesuvio stirs with ancestral fire and the sea becomes a liminal realm of longing\, alchemy\, and rebirth. \nThough the sirens’ voices have been silenced over centuries\, these poems listen deeply\, inviting their songs to be heard by all who are ready to receive them. \nAbout the Author:\nJennifer Barone is an Italian-American poet and artist\, with roots in the Bay of Naples\, Italy. She is the author of four poetry collections\, including Saporoso: Poems of Italian Food & Love\, Feather Press. A two-time winner of the San Francisco Public Library’s Poets Eleven contest for North Beach\, where Jennifer resides. At Telegraph Hill Books and Libreria Pino\, she curates and hosts Italian-English poetry readings\, leads writing workshops\, and hosts the Voices From the Hill podcast\, interviewing SF Bay Area authors. Her work has been published in multiple literary journals\, and featured at SFMOMA\, de Young Museum\, SFJAZZ Center\, and Marin Poetry Center\, among others. SUMMARY:Gaucho Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Gaucho is a masterful Bay Area band that combines the influence of gypsy jazz of 1930’s Europe with the rhythmic drive and collective improvisation of New Orleans swing music\, gutbucket blues and elements of ragtime. Their sound\, a uniquely American concoction\, blends instrumental acuity and lighthearted humor that keep their audience coming back for more. As founder\, guitarist\, and main composer Dave Ricketts says\, the band is “in love with the music of Louis Armstrong\, Fats Waller and Jimmie Rodgers\, as well as the stories\, the life styles and the foot steps of hundreds of other great jazz\, blues\, country and rock musicians that created the sound of American Music from roughly 1900-1950’s” \nGaucho has recorded eight albums\, tours regularly\, and has an increasing repertoire of over forty original tunes. Seven of their tunes are featured in the 2012 film “Trattoria”; one was chosen by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their website; and another is featured in the outtakes section of the Pixar DVD CARS 2. In 2018\, Gaucho got a song in the Hollywood Movie “Destination Wedding” starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. And two of Dave’s own compositions will be placed in a New York City based indie film\, “Stationed at Home\,” in 2022. \nLed by eminent guitarist\, Dave Ricketts\, the group has been a San Francisco mainstay for nearly twenty years\, and one of the busiest bands in the bay area playing 5 to 10 gigs a week. Together with virtuosos Rob Reich–accordion and Craig Venetresco–guitar\, superlative bassist Ari Munkres\, the honorable Leon Oakley–cornet\, and versatile percussionist Steve Apple\, these guys keep crowds moving with their beats and complex rhythms.

SUMMARY:Coit Tower Poetry Club reads Robert Creely
DESCRIPTION:Join the Coit Tower Poetry Club for the June installment of their First Friday residency on the back lawn of Coit Tower. This month’s featured poet turns toward the spare\, searching voice of Robert Creely (1926–2005). A central figure in the Black Mountain poetry movement and a close collaborator of Charles Olson\, Creeley wrote with radical economy — short lines\, fragmented syntax\, and an intense focus on the rhythms of thought and feeling as they unfold in real time. Following the club’s tradition\, attendees gather in a circle on the back lawn of Coit Tower\, passing around selected works and reading aloud\, with the city and Bay spread out below — an open\, informal evening of poetry in a neighborhood long shaped by the literary traditions Creeley helped define. \n

SUMMARY:Magic School Busk
DESCRIPTION:Experience the ultimate “living theater” of North Beach as The Magic School Busk takes up their weekly residency directly in front of The Red Window. Positioned at the vibrant\, sun-soaked corner of Stockton and Columbus\, this high-energy busking collective captures the spontaneous spirit of the neighborhood. \nThe performance is a masterclass in Street Swing and improvisational Jazz. Drawing from the “busking” tradition of New Orleans and the European “Hot Club” sound\, the ensemble specializes in acoustic music that is both technically brilliant and completely unpretentious. The line-up is fluid\, often featuring a “who’s who” of local instrumentalists who bring a “restless melodicism” to classic standards and upbeat\, toe-tapping originals. \nThe Magic School Busk is more than just a band; they are the neighborhood’s “resident joy-makers.” Because they perform on the street level\, the barrier between musician and audience disappears\, inviting passersby to stop\, dance\, and engage with the music in real-time. Whether you are enjoying a gin tonic on the Red Window’s outdoor patio or just walking by with a cannoli in hand\, the band provides an elite\, soulful soundtrack that defines the modern North Beach experience. \n\nAbout The Magic School Busk\nBorn from the city’s post-pandemic “street-side” revival\, The Magic School Busk is a collective of veteran Bay Area musicians dedicated to the art of public performance. They emphasize the “acoustic and the authentic\,” eschewing heavy amplification for the natural resonance of brass\, strings\, and woodwinds. \n
