Jacknife brings hard-hitting West Coast post-bop to The Deluxe as San Francisco saxophonist Steven Lugerner leads his formidable quintet through the music of jazz legend Jackie McLean — exploring tunes from McLean’s seminal early- and mid-1960s Blue Note albums Jacknife, It’s Time, Let Freedom Ring, and New Soil with the creative heat and searing intensity the music demands. Joining Lugerner are trumpeter JJ Kirkpatrick, pianist Richard Sears, bassist Garret Lang, and drummer Michael Mitchell — a collective that has toured internationally and bridged the New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco jazz scenes, with credits ranging from Albert “Tootie” Heath and Fred Hersch to Wynton Marsalis, Miguel Zenón, and even Beyoncé and Louis CK.
