Dawn Club

May 28 @ 9:59 am

Vibe: Art Deco Elegance | Cinematic Speakeasy | Golden Age Jazz Lounge
Tucked away in a small alley beside the Palace Hotel, the Dawn Club is a resurrection of one of the most important venues in American jazz history. Originally opened as a speakeasy in 1933, it became the epicenter of the Great Jazz Revival in the 1940s and home base for Lu Watters and his Yerba Buena Jazz Band, whose San Francisco Style was broadcast to troops throughout the Pacific during WWII. After closing in 1946, the room lay dormant for 77 years until it was restored it to its former glory in 2023.
The Vibe
Entering the Dawn Club feels like walking onto the set of a 1940s noir film. The room is a masterclass in Art Deco design: a sleek, expansive space with glowing tableside lamps, velvet booths, and an iconic checkerboard dance floor (now mostly filled with tables). The walls are lined with original vinyl of the Air Shots recorded here in the 1940s and other memorabilia from the Yerba Buena Jazz Band era. Dim, moody lighting makes every guest feel like they’ve stepped into a world of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Live Jazz & Fine Spirits
Music and spirits share top billing, with studio-quality acoustics so every note lands cleanly. There is live jazz every night, typically beginning around 8:00 PM, featuring some of the Bay Area’s most accomplished players — from traditional swing trios to contemporary quartets and soul‑jazz ensembles. The back bar is dominated by a massive wall of whiskey, 15 years in the making, stocked with rare, out‑of‑production, and highly allocated bottles, plus a flight program served on custom tasting trays with hand‑cut ice. The cocktail list focuses on post‑Prohibition classics and modern interpretations, crafted with the same precision you’d expect from its sister bar, Bourbon & Branch.
Details that define the room
• “Music fee” applies to table reservations after 7:00 PM; the fee is distributed 100% to the musicians.
• No kitchen on site — it’s strictly a cocktail and music lounge, so plan dinner nearby beforehand.
• Reservations are highly recommended for tables with clear stage views; the bar area is first‑come, first‑served.
• Entrance is on Annie Street, a pedestrian alley just off Market; look for the vintage‑style neon marquee.
